Reading Alone in the Dark
Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual
The Monster Manual is one of the core rulebooks of the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) role-playing game.
It is a reference book that provides descriptions, statistics, and illustrations of various creatures and monsters that players might encounter in their adventures. These include everything from ordinary animals and humanoid foes to fantastical beasts, undead, dragons, and otherworldly entities.
The Monster Manual is a weird one to run on, but ya gotta start somewhere. First, it was a gift from my daughter this Christmas as a “halfway” joke into my nerdiness and hers. Secondly, when I was a kid, D&D is one of the things that got me reading. I’m not sure which came first for me,. D&D or Lord of the Rings, but they definatly worked in tandum in my world. The beginnings of my reading and the inceptions of my writing were driven by D&D. Seems like as good a place as any to find inspiration.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
As a group of strangers gathers to investigate the mysteries of Hill House, they find themselves ensnared in a nightmarish journey through the mansion’s eerie halls.
The story centers around Eleanor Vance, a fragile and troubled woman who experiences strange and terrifying events that test her grip on reality. Jackson’s haunting prose and expert weaving of psychological suspense make this novel a classic of the genre.
